It’s the abbreviation from “Women Crush Wednesday” which is when people share pictures of ladies that they find attractive or admire. Both male and female Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr users participate in the weekly trend, which has a peak each Wednesday, where the last of the Ws comes from. It’s like a mini social media holiday where everyone participates in sharing a picture of their favorite female or “girl crush.” It could be a famous celebrity like Jennifer Lawrence, or even someone’s love interest. It’s a good way to acknowledge an important person in your life, or just give some indication of what you find appealing.
#WCW trend isn’t limited to people. There are some who share photos of the Starbucks mermaid or some cartoon character like Dexter’s mom.
WCW is just another way to get people engaged, many of those pics have a lot of shares, RT’s and likes. It’s an easy way to start a conversation especially if you are not sure what to share.
In the early days of Twitter WCW was used with the meaning of World Champions Wrestling. Somewhere around 2011 the #womencrushwednesday appeared and has been trending ever since.
